Mentoring Relationships are Key to Greatness!
The quality of your life or your business depends on the quality of your relationships. The definition of greatness and success is never complete without an element of successful relationships. The most important activity in life is building relationships. Leadership is the art of developing and fostering relationships through which goals can be achieved and tasks undertaken.
Stephen Graham once said, “To pursue success effectively, you must build supportive relationships that will help you work towards your goals. To build those relationships, you need to trust others; and to earn their trust, you in turn must learn to be trustworthy.” – Stedman Graham,
Mentoring is an age old key to leveraging relationships to help you attain your greatness in your chosen calling. Mentoring is about developing relationships that improve you. You know you have been successful in developing a relationship if you can easily pick up a phone and call someone and discuss whatever issue is at hand.
No person ever succeeds alone. Even those that may claim to have pulled themselves up by the bootstraps need other people to facilitate and celebrate their success.
In life there are two ways to learn – Mistakes or Mentors. Mistakes are a learning method that is reserved for those who are stubborn and are not willing to invest time with a mentor. Mentoring is essential and critical for every person regardless of the field of endeavour, calling or age. It reduces the learning period, increases effectiveness and gives you experienced shoulders to stand and build on. It acts as a lever that makes you lift weights that would have been very difficult to lift on your own.
Mentoring is the key to greatness and building supportive success-based relationships. Your success is the success of the mentor! When you mentor other people you contribute to your own success. You open a door for your own future blessing. In Shona there is a saying which goes, “Chirere chigokurerawo mangwana.” Literally translated this could be rendered as, “Look after it and it will look after you as well tomorrow”. The effort and investment you place into developing your protégé or mentee (The person you are mentoring) are not a waste but an investment in your destiny.
Edwin Cole exhorts us to “Invest your time with men who inspire, invest your money with men who produce and invest your talent with men who create.”
What is a mentoring? Mentoring is the practice of teaching someone practically, from what you know and have lived or worked through. A mentor is different from a teacher. A mentor is a life model. He is somebody who has applied or is applying with positive effect the principles that he shares. A teacher is important and useful and he can teach you things that he may not believe in or fully understand himself.
In your success journey you need to have mentors that can guide you along and help you. A relationship with a mentor creates for you a well of inspiration that you can tap on. It creates a support base that helps you remain focussed and to achieve things faster than you would have done otherwise.
