No Winning Without Focus!

Without clear goals we are hopelessly lost. Goals are not mere campaign statements but things that we are committed to. Commitment is not just the vocabulary of greatness it is an absolute essential. Goals create a sense of focus. Nothing great can ever be achieved without an unyielding focus. Focus results in the concentration of power and dynamic action. We can never hope to win if we are not willing to focus on our goals and give them our all in terms of action, commitment and indeed sacrifice. To seek the luxury of harvest during the season of planting is self deception.

We are on a mission towards greatness when we start doing something to get your goals and achieve our set visions. A vision that cannot be translated into clear goals is a mere dream. Dreaming is good except that at some point we have to wake up and start taking action. I like to put it this way: “if you cannot dream, why should you sleep and if you cannot pursue your dreams, why should you wake up?”

Most people bath daily, usually in the morning. Unfortunately during the winter months some have to use every known tactic to avoid bathing or at least to “summarise” the bath. I have a practice that I have found useful over the years. Before taking a bath I ask myself: “Do I really have some goals that I am pursuing today which are really worth bathing for?” When our goals are clear our bathing and any other activity in our lives become purposeful. When there is no clear sense of purpose, abuse of resources is inevitable. In talking about Goal Setting, Harvey Mackay once said: “Goals give you more than a reason to get up in the morning; they are an incentive to keep you going all day. Goals tend to tap the deeper resources and draw the best out of life.” Goals draw the best out of people and organisations. For goals to be useful they must be big, bold and stretching.

Boredom is always the symptom of an idle goal-less life. When we have big goals that we are pursuing we can never hazard an idle purposeless moment. Look for any great person and you will find that their lives were always characterised by goal getting, focus and action. Be it Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Tiger Woods, Bill Gates, Strive Masiyiwa, Jairos Jiri, or any other achiever. They at some moment in their lives might have faced the possibility of failure but in life when we ask for the impossible we very often get the best possible.

Goals need to be revised and reviewed often. May the following words of Joe Klock inspire all of us to either start setting goals or to revise our goals. Klock said: “It is the absence of immediate and compelling goals that leads to boredom, low energy, pessimism, depression and despair, among a heap of other unpleasant conditions. The worst affliction in life is neither pain, nor poverty, nor misfortune, nor the perfidy of others, because all of these have been met and defeated by those with a determination to do so. The ultimate scourge is purposelessness – a pervading realisation that one’s life has no value to the world. Fortunately, it afflicts only those who choose to have no purpose.”

To your greatness
