New Season, New Beginnings!
Life is not as long as it sometimes feels when we are young. In fact life can fly so fast in our faces that we may wonder what we did with the days that God gave to us. Take for instance the life of Joe who died at 70 years of age. Joe lived 25,550 days. This looks like a lot until we consider a few more facts. Joe spent 23 years in school; this represented 8,395 days (33% of his life). Assuming that Joe slept for 8 hours every day, it means that he was asleep for a third of his life and this represents 8,517 days. If Joe had no clear purpose, did not have worthwhile goals and was not focused, it is probable that he wasted his days and wondered why he died a frustrated, angry, mediocre and unfulfilled man. This was Joe, what about you and me? Manage Your Purpose
Life was never meant to be a purposeless struggle. Rick Warren in his classic book, The Purpose Driven Life, outlines 5 purposes for which we were all created. Warren says that: 1. We were planned for God’s pleasure, 2. We were formed for God’s family, 3. We were created to become like Christ, 4. We were shaped for serving God and 5. We were made with a mission. None of us is so useless that he or she could be classified as junk. God never makes any junk and each of us has a special part in his plan and purpose. All we need is to “tune in” to his frequency.
Each of us is born to fulfil a special purpose. We cannot create this purpose but we can discover it. Each of us is hardwired and shaped by God for our own special contribution in life. Climbing higher and faster up any ladder is not as important as having the ladder leaning against the right wall. Regardless of how fast we may speed if we are lost from our purpose we only increase our frustration.
I struggled for many years with the question of my purpose. Questions that helped me clarify and focus on my purpose include the following:
- What is it that gives me the greatest fulfilment?
- What would I be doing if money was not an issue?
- What work was I involved in when I felt the most useful?
- What would I like to be remembered for when I die?
- What have I always felt I would like to do with my life?
- What makes me feel the pleasure of God?
The challenge is that at times we are trying to impress everyone else and at times we end up being very funny clones. Each of us has a special contribution and place in this life. It is sad to live in the shadows of life when one can drink in the sunshine.
To your greatness!
