The Trap of Doing Nothing!

Whenever we do nothing we always get a predictable result – anyone can guess what the result is. A farmer who plants nothing and hopes for success is a true traitor. A trader who sells nothing and hopes for profits is a thief. A person who sleeps all day and dreams of being something will harvest a long and yawning nightmare. If anything is to be different we have to take different action. To change consequences we have to change action. To change a harvest we have to change the seed we are planting. Doing what we have always done and expecting different results is a sign of self-deception, narrow-mindedness and insanity. Read more

You Are What You Eat

It is easy to just get anything and pop it into our mouths without thinking about the significance of what we are doing. For some people eating is a form of recreation or hobby. Just because food happens to be there does not mean that it should be eaten. While it is true that there are people who are starving, there are others whose problem is compulsive eating.

Some people complain about their weight but never take time to think about the foods they eat, how and when they eat. Unfortunately there are so many items that are promoted as food when they are simply junk – they will amuse our palate but have little nutritional value. There is a difference between feeding and nutrition. We can literally feed on anything but it may not have the right nutritional value we require to fuel and repair our bodies. We become what we eat. A lot of us think that age is a liability, but it can be a great asset. What matters most is our attitude. We are as old as our doubts, unbelief and cynicism. A friend forwarded this story to me. I do not know the original author, whom I would have acknowledged. I story is a great example of a person who has a great spirit and a great attitude to life. Read it and I am sure you will be as challenged as I was:

The story…

“The first day of school our Professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze. “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids.” Read more

Change is one of the constants in life. In Africa, particularly in Zimbabwe at present change is happening at an accelerated pace. What some people call fast is really slow in comparison to changes in a hyperinflationary environment where the current rate of inflation in in excess of 12million% per annum. That is not an exaggeration by an understatement.

Whenever we have to deal with change at times it is difficult to know where to start or what to do. I came across a little book on change that I enjoyed reading entitled Our Iceberg is Melting by John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber. The book using the time testing method of teaching, the story, outlines the 8 steps to change. I outline these steps below: Read more

Increase Your Confidence and Self Belief

A few years ago I sat on my desk wondering if I should write a book. My mind started going through all the great people that I had met and admired. As each name came up I felt smaller. I wondered whom I was to write a book when all these luminaries have not written one. Many questions cropped up: “Who am I? What do I know? What can I ever say?” Looking back at those days I see how I robbed myself and other people by not having self-confidence. A lack of self-confidence steals courage, dampens spirits and makes people cower when they should stand up and be counted. Self-confidence can be built if one is willing to take action. . Read more
